Typical pruning requests in Tacoma
Roof, chimney & alley clearance
Lifting and shortening limbs that rub shingles, fill gutters, overhang garages or block trucks in the alley.
Deadwood out
Taking dead and broken limbs out of firs, maples and oaks before the next wind or snow brings them down for you.
Thinning for light
Selective cuts that open the canopy for the garden or solar panels and cut wind load, without topping.
Young-tree structure
Shaping newly planted trees, including free trees from the city's programs, so they grow a strong central leader.
Street trees need a permit, even for pruning
Tacoma is stricter about planting-strip trees than many cities. Under TMC 9.20, any pruning or removal of a tree in the public right-of-way needs a Tree Work (RTRE) permit, and the city says pruning permits are free. The work has to follow ANSI A300 standards, and right-of-way trees can't be topped under any circumstances. On private property, pruning normally doesn't need a permit.
Why topping backfires
Topping a tall fir or maple to "make it safe" usually makes it less safe. The tree pushes out clusters of fast, weakly attached shoots, and the big wounds rot. Better options are reducing specific limbs, thinning, or removing a tree that has outgrown its spot. Good crews cut just outside the branch collar, don't use climbing spikes on trees being kept, and don't remove more foliage than the tree can handle in one season.
Timing pruning in Tacoma
- Dead or hanging limbs: right away, any season.
- Most deciduous trees: during dormancy, late fall through winter, when the structure is easy to see.
- Big-leaf maple: bleeds sap in late winter and early spring, so many pros schedule big cuts for summer or late fall.
- Oregon white oak: light, careful work only. Ask a pro familiar with Garry oaks before any heavy cutting.
- Before storm season: get conifer clearance and risk pruning done by early fall.
- Nesting birds: a careful crew checks before heavy spring pruning.
